Verbena Collection: Capturing the essence of Porto

Imagine wandering the sun-drenched streets of Porto on what turned out to be one of our best holidaysโ€ฆ the Douro River sparkling below, olive groves and vineyards stretching endlessly along its banks, the air alive with citrus and warmth. And then, tucked into those historic lanes, we stumbled upon something that felt like pure magic: Castelbel's Verbena collection. That trip brought home more than memories, it brought a new favourite that now fragrances our days with the same refreshing joy.

Why Verbena is such a favourite

Verbena (or lemongrass-like citrus verbena) has that bright, zesty lift that instantly makes any space feel alive and uplifting. For me, it's the therapeutic side that truly captivates, the natural essential oils that calm the mind, ease tension, and bring a gentle, mood-boosting energy without any harsh synthetics. That's why I was drawn to Castelbel's Verbena line right away. These aren't just pretty scents; they're built around natural ingredients and sustainable materials for instance the verbena diffuser:

  • Oil-based with added essential oils โ€” no alcohol, so it evaporates slowly and lasts beautifully
  • Signature hand-blown glass bottle & natural cork stopper โ€” Exclusive bottles hand-crafted by artisans with a classic apothecary look: clear, elegant, perfectly proportioned. Paired with sustainable Portuguese cork stoppers, harvested, renewable, biodegradable, and providing a gentle seal for slow evaporation
  • Refillable design โ€” pop in a refill when needed, making it more sustainable and kinder to the planet

The Artisan Heart of Porto

Porto stole our hearts with its artisan soulโ€”built on centuries of workshops, where streets are even named after factories (Rua das Flores, Rua da Fรกbrica). It's a city where craft still matters deeply. Castelbel and their Portus Cale line embody that perfectly. The diffusers come in signature bottles hand-blown in Portugal by glass artisans from Marinha Grande, exclusively for the brand. Each one is a little piece of that heritage, elegant, unique, and unmistakably Portuguese.

The stopper? Natural cork, grown and harvested right here in Portugal, extracted just like the cork from a fine wine bottle (a gentle twist and pull). It's sustainable, tactile, and ties back to the land. And the packaging? As someone who spent years as a graphic designer, I can't get enough of it. The boxes feature illustrations created exclusively by a professional painter/illustrator who works just for Castelbel, every one original, whimsical, and utterly charming.

There is a saying in Portugal: "Braga reza, o Porto trabalha e Lisboa diverte-se." Braga prays, Porto is the workshop and Lisbon plays. I love this because really my work is my play and my prayer.

More than home fragrances: beautiful decorative pieces that fragrance your space gently and thoughtfully. A reminder that the best things often come from slowing down, appreciating craft, and letting nature do the work.
