How Frankincense & Myrrh Are Made
The resins are harvested directly from the trees, the bark is carefully scored, allowing resin to exude and harden into "tears." These are collected, sorted, and steam-distilled to produce pure essential oil.
Standing there this morning as the thurible released its clouds of incense, I was reminded all over again why I fell in love with these resins in the first place.
The Original Christmas Gifts
Like so many of us, my very first memory of frankincense and myrrh comes from the Nativity story we heard every Christmas as children. Three Wise Men from the East arrive at the stable bearing three extraordinary gifts:
- Gold symbolises Kingship
- Frankincense – Divinity
- Myrrh – for a man who would one day die
Frankincense was literally "pure incense." Its white, fragrant smoke rose in temples across the Middle East as an offering to the divine. When the Magi laid it before the child in Bethlehem, they were saying, "You are worthy of worship."
Myrrh was darker and more bittersweet. It was used to anoint priests and kings, but also to prepare bodies for burial. In giving myrrh, the Magi quietly foretold the suffering and death Jesus would one day endure on the cross.
These weren't random expensive spices. They were medicine, perfume, and sacred incense all in one – rarer and often more costly by weight than gold itself.
Two thousand years later the thurible still swings in church, and that familiar, holy scent fills the air symbolising prayers rising to God.
That cloud of incense, that feeling of peace and reverence, and all the therapeutic benefits of these ancient resins are exactly what I wanted to capture for you in our soap.
